The sixth release from Glenmorangie's exceedingly popular Private Edition series is the Tùsail, which has been made with Maris Otter barley. Maris Otter was originally bred in 1965 to meet the need for a high quality brewing malt, though it eventually fell out of style, with higher-yielding varieties taking its place.
Although the barley was perhaps not as widely used as before, some very clever people made sure to secure the future of Maris Otter, allowing producers to continue to use this high quality malt for their tasty ales... and for whisky, too!
Dr. Bill Lumsden and his team have created the Tùsail, a single malt Scotch whisky made using Maris Otter barley (which has been floor malted by hand), matured in a small amount of specially selected casks. A very, very cool release from the Glenmorangie Private Collection.
