| CONVALMORE 36 years Cask Strength Bottling Note~ The Convalmore distillery was located in the heart of Speyside between the Glenfiddich & Craigellachie distilleries. It was founded in 1893 or 1894 by the Convalmore-Glenlivet Distillery Co. Ltd. and was one of the few whisky distilleries in the area that was NOT designed by Charles Doig. Instead, local architect Donald Mackay drew up the plans for Convalmore. If Google is not mistaken, this was the only Scotch whisky distillery that was designed by Donald. Matured in European Oak refill casks, only 2,680 sought after, natural cask strength bottles are available as part of Diageo's 2013 Special Releases. Tasting note~ Color :Bright Straw Nose:Treacle, biscuits and fruity boiled sweets at first, but this one really opens up wonderfully, becoming more honeyed with mead and dried herbs before elegant spicy wood notes develop. Palate:Warming wood continues on a vaguely Christmassy palate. Red apple, dark spices. Finish:Red apple peel and soft oak touch of smoke. Plenty going on here - the nose especially is excellent. There’s still life in this 36 year old, a rare treat from a distillery that closed in 1985. |
