GLENDRONACH 20 years PX Sherry Octaves Bottling Note~ A fantastic bottling of 5 Pedro Ximénez Sherry Octaves, each matured for a minimum of 20 years, selected by Master Distiller Billy Walker! The total outturn was 371 bottles. "Octave casks" are made from staves of a previously used sherry butt and are approximately one-eighth the size of a butt or approximately 100 litres (the same size used to mature Yalumba's famous Octavius Shiraz). Though these baby barrels can be used to ameliorate sub standard spirit, a smaller cask also allows for more interaction between the wood and the spirit, giving the whisky a greater depth of flavour and aroma in a shorter period of time. In this case, the result is a rare combination of heavyweight sherry and robust, rich Highland malt characteristics. Tasting Note~ Color:Dark amber with reddish hues. Nose:Wonderfully rich, sweet, jammy, strawberry liqueur, blackberries, raisin vanilla Palate:White chocolate, prunes, ripe watermelon, all that nested in a superb oak, softly spicy.And there’re also bags of raisins, as expected, and a touch of balsamic and even a little soy sauce. With water: a little more leather, almonds and even pistachios, with less fresh fruits. Dried figs. Really became beautiful with the addition of a little water. Finish: Excellent length. The sort of whisky that opens in degrees and so keeps you coming back. Shake and Give it 10 minutes in the glass to reveal its best. |
